Akis Papakyriacou

Akis graduated from the University of Salford with first class honours (LL.B.) and obtained his M.Sc  from the University of Oxford (Corpus Christi). Akis attended the City Law School where he passed the Bar Professional Training Course (Very Competent). Following the completion of his studies, in 2016, Akis returned to Cyprus completing his vocational training in one of the leading law firms, where he continued working after the completion of his training, specializing in corporate, banking and finance law until September 2018. Prior to forming Papakyriacou LLC, Akis worked as a partner in a law firm in Nicosia.

Akis focuses on corporate, banking and finance transactions, with experience in both local and international finance transactions. His knowledge and expertise also extend to merger and acquisition transactions, corporate restructurings, employment law matters and fund related matters. He has been involved in some of the most important transactions of the last few years, indicatively including the following:

  • Acting for a major Cyprus bank with respect to the establishment of a debt recovery servicing joint venture

  • Acting as the legal advisor of a foreign bank with respect of the sale of its stake in a Cyprus bank

  • Acting for EBRD with respect to the first project financing carried out be EBRD in Cyprus

  • Advising a major Cyprus bank on the acquisition of assets and liabilities of another Cyprus bank

  • Advising a syndication of international lenders with respect to senior debt facility which was granted for the acquisition of a multi-billion NPL portfolio

  • Acted for a major Cyprus bank in a debt-for-asset swap transaction, of approximate value EURO 220,000,000

  • Advising a Greek bank on a bond loan involving Cyprus companies

  • Acting for the lender with respect to a multi-million financing for the purchase and/or renovation of a number of hotels in Cyprus

  • Actively involved in the drafting of legislation
